A standard dumpster truck has a legal weight limit for the road, and the disposal facility that receives the load charges by the ton, not by the cubic yard. Regular household debris, old carpet, drywall, broken furniture, is bulky but light. A full 20-yard box of that stuff might weigh two or three tons. The same box filled with broken concrete can weigh eight tons or more. That is the difference between one truck trip and potentially an overweight load that cannot legally leave the property until some material comes back out.

This is why concrete and other masonry debris almost always get quoted separately from general junk, with a much lower weight allowance built into the price. It is not that the material is harder to deal with. It is that so much of it fits in so little space.

Why Springfield homeowners run into this so often

The Ozarks sit on karst limestone, and that affects how foundations and flatwork behave here more than people realize. Slabs poured directly on clay-heavy soil shift with the wet and dry cycles our region gets every year. Measuring the area and the thickness before you make any calls will save you a wasted trip and a rejected order. Most companies will ask for those numbers anyway. If you are unsure how thick a slab is, check any exposed edge, like where it meets a step or a foundation wall, rather than guessing.

Where this stops being a do-it-yourself job

Breaking up a small patio or a short section of walkway with a rented breaker or a sledgehammer is within reach for a lot of homeowners, and loading the pieces by hand into a dumpster is just slow, not skilled. Where it gets past a homeowner job is the loading itself once the pieces get large. A slab section the size of a dinner table can weigh several hundred pounds, and lifting that alone, especially onto the lip of a dumpster, is how backs and fingers get hurt.

It is also worth being honest about volume. A full driveway, or a slab poured with wire mesh or old rebar tangled through it, is heavy enough and awkward enough that most people are better off hiring someone with the equipment to break, load and haul it. At that point the question is not whether you can do it, it is whether doing it yourself is actually saving you anything once you account for the extra dumpster swaps, the rental equipment, and the time.
