The smell hits before you even get downstairs
If you're standing at the top of the basement stairs in Springfield right now, you probably already know something's wrong before you flip the light on. That damp, mineral smell. Maybe a darker line on the carpet or the bottom foot of drywall. After a hard spring storm rolls through the Ozarks, or after a fast snowmelt in February soaks ground that's still partly frozen, a lot of Springfield basements take on water they weren't built to handle.
Our clay-heavy soil doesn't drain the way sandy soil does. It holds water against foundation walls for days after the rain stops, and a lot of the housing stock here, especially the ranch and split-level homes built through the 60s, 70s and 80s, has basements that were finished decades ago without much thought to what would happen if water ever got in. Carpet glued straight to concrete. Drywall run right down to the slab. None of it was built to dry out.
What actually needs to leave the house first
Porous materials that touched the water have to go, and they have to go fast. That means carpet and carpet pad, always. Pad especially, because it holds water like a sponge and starts breeding mold within a day or two in our humidity. Any drywall or baseboard that wicked water up from the floor needs to come out too, usually cut a foot above the highest water line just to be safe.
Cardboard boxes, particleboard furniture, old mattresses stored down there, insulation batts that got wet: all of it needs to come out before it starts feeding mold growth. Springfield summers are humid enough that wet material sitting in a closed-up basement for even three or four days can start growing something visible. If you can see a waterline on the wall, assume anything below it that isn't solid wood, metal, or plastic is done.

What you can actually sort through yourself
This is the part a homeowner can do without paying anyone. Pull small items, keepsakes, photo boxes, paperwork, and get them somewhere dry and ventilated to assess later, even if that's just spread out on the garage floor with a fan running. Solid furniture, plastic totes, metal shelving: wipe it down, let it dry, it's probably fine.
The judgment call is usually drywall and flooring. If you're comfortable with a utility knife and a pry bar, cutting out wet drywall yourself is straightforward work, just wear a mask and gloves. Carpet pull-up is heavy, wet, awkward work, but it's doable with two people. Where it gets harder is subfloor. If the plywood or particleboard underneath the carpet has swollen or gone soft, that's no longer a weekend project. That's a call to someone who does this for a living.
Where the pile goes and why it can't just sit in the driveway
Once you've pulled the wet material out, you've got a pile of ruined carpet, pad, and drywall that's heavy, wet, and starting to smell. This is where a lot of people underestimate the volume. A finished basement of even 800 square feet can generate several tons of debris once everything's wet through. Regular trash pickup in Springfield won't take it, and it shouldn't sit in a driveway for a week either, because it keeps shedding moisture and mold spores the whole time.
A dumpster sized for the job, dropped at the curb or driveway for the duration of the cleanout, is usually the practical answer. It gets the wet material off the property fast instead of staging it in the garage or yard, which matters more here than in a drier climate because our summer humidity gives mold a real head start.
When the water damage is more than a basement problem
If the water came from a sewer backup rather than groundwater or storm runoff, stop and treat everything differently. That's contaminated water, and the removal and disposal rules are stricter for good reason. Same goes for any flooding that reached electrical outlets or the furnace and water heater, both of which usually sit in Springfield basements. Don't reset a breaker or relight a pilot light on equipment that sat in water. Have it checked before you touch it.
And if this is the second or third time this basement has flooded, the debris cleanout is the easy part. The harder question is why water keeps finding its way in, whether that's grading around the foundation, a failing sump pump, or a foundation crack that's been letting groundwater through for years. That's worth a conversation with a foundation or waterproofing contractor once the cleanup is done, not during it.
